There is a quiet revolution that is sweeping the planet today. Society is transforming at every level, but there is no political doctrine or leadership behind this revolution. And, for the most part, it is not one that is fuelled by anger, hatred or violence. No. This revolution is a peaceful one.
The revolution we see on the surface is merely a symptom; a symptom of something much deeper and far more powerful… something that is challenging so much of our understanding of ourselves and of what it means to be human… something that is transforming us at our very core.
Welcome to The Shift!
2012 and Mayan Calendar
Many ancient cultures believed in the idea of the age or era, and in the periodic change from one such age to another. In the Hindu tradition, we have the concept of the ‘Yuga’. With the Hopi Indians, we have the concept of the ‘Hoop’. And with the Mayan civilisation, we have the ‘Age’.
All of these, though varied in length (in terms of modern calendar years), encapsulate large periods of time. For instance, the Mayan ‘Age’, according to their Long Count Calendar, lasts for 5,126 years.
This Calendar indicates that the previous Age ends on 21st of December 2012, after which a new one begins. This transition from one Age to another is called ‘the Shift of the Ages’.
Astrological Events
As with many calendars, the Long Count Calendar of the Maya is based on astronomical events.
But, as we shall see, the end date of the Calendar and the periods preceding and following it are considered special perhaps, not so much from an astronomical standpoint, but more an astrological one.
Firstly, the 21st of December 2012 marked the Winter Solstice, an event viewed by ancient cultures as a time of death and rebirth.
Next, it appears that we also completed a 26,000-year cycle referred to as the ‘Precession of the Equinoxes’ around this time.
Some believe that yet another event, termed the ‘Galactic Alignment’ (where our Sun aligns with the galactic equator of the Milky Way Galaxy) also took place around this time.
And, as if all of this wasn’t enough, it appears that these events took place at a time when our galaxy was passing through an ocean of light called the Photon Belt.
Packing a Cosmic Punch
Each of these events, taken on their own, are supposed to exert a powerful positive influence on human consciousness.
Consequently, all of these phenomena occurring at roughly the same time is bound to pack one heck of an astrological punch! Hence, the Shift.
I won’t dwell too long on these subjects though, as my knowledge about them is scant, to say the very least. But, before I move on, it’s worth mentioning that my gut feeling on the matter is that there is some truth behind these ideas and going by my own experience and that of many of the people I have discussed this matter with, something definitely seems to be going on.
Anyway, getting back to the subject of 2012…
2012 and the Hopi and Mayan Prophecies
Both the Hopi and Maya cultures had prophecies about 2012, which are said to be similar in nature. They both predicted a time of chaos and upheaval, which would be followed by a golden age – an era characterised by love, peace and universal brotherhood.
21st December 2012 – Doomsday?
The above prophecies gave rise to a lot of mystery and confusion surrounding the Shift of 2012, and in particular, the date 21st of December 2012.
Some speculated that the world would end on this date. After all, it was the date on which the Calendar ended, wasn’t it? And, wasn’t there evidence to suggest that previous such ages had ended amidst calamities and catastrophes?
When you consider the challenges and upheavals we were going through at the time (and still are in many ways), you couldn’t really blame the doomsday prophets for their outlook. But, as we all know, (and thankfully) the world didn’t end in 2012.
Some others expected sudden and major changes on the date itself. But, as we saw, nothing of the sort happened.
So, it turns out that most people had 2012 all wrong.
Putting 2012 into Perspective
The world wasn’t going to end on the 21st of December 2012. It wasn’t supposed to. What was more likely to end was the world as we knew it – a world dominated by masculine virtues and characterised by materialism, egotism, individualism, competitiveness and the idea that ‘might is right’.
The next Age is said to restore balance, within man himself, and between man and nature. It will see the return of the Divine Feminine, which will bring with it spiritual awareness, intuition, creativity, compassion, healing, nurturing, cooperation and integration (Oneness).
But this wasn’t going to happen in the space of just one day. More likely, and, as is the case with most change, it is going to be a slow and gradual process.
My understanding is that the actual changes began way before 2012 and will go on taking effect well past this date. But 2012 is still significant in that it is the marker; the line in the sand that stands as a definite signpost to let us know that we have crossed the threshold into a new Age.
2012 and the Shift in Consciousness
And so, even as we live through the turmoil of political, social and financial upheaval, at a time when a Third World War or environmental calamity seems imminent, The Shift is taking place all around us, if only we have the eyes to see it.
Both from a figurative and a literal point of view, all the additional light and positive energy is supposed to help dispel the darkness that has hung over us for so long, as well as shed light on matters that have long been hidden from us.
During this time of transition, we’re also said to be making the shift from being dominated by fear-based thought to thoughts based on love, and from a competitive mindset to one of cooperation and collaboration.
As all of this unfolds, the old order is crumbling – even as it tries desperately to hold on to its power and is throwing everything it has at us: more restrictive laws and controls, greater surveillance, the attack on our bodies through food, water and medication; the disruption of the natural processes of our bodies through increased electromagnetic radiation (wifi, mobile phones and cell phone towers, ‘smart homes’ and the rest of it); splitting up families and communities in covert and overt ways, and on it goes. But try as they might, they are powerless to prevent the inevitable.
The Awakening
Each day, more and more people are emerging from their stupor of ignorance and conditioned behaviour. Each day brings with it new and startling revelations that lead us to question our thinking and direction (take for example the disclosures made by WikiLeaks and Edward Snowdon, and the recent Facebook fiasco, to name just a few).
Humanity is waking up from its collective nightmare and realising the part they have played in creating and perpetuating it.
Humanity is now choosing to reject the old ways and the beliefs that no longer serve it.
People are coming to realise – many for the first time – their true nature and the nature of life and reality. They are becoming aware of the hidden hand that has been controlling and manipulating human affairs for so long.
People are realising the responsibility they have over their own lives, towards each other, and the planet we live on. They are also sensing their connection with everyone else; with nature and with All that Is. They are now choosing to operate from this place of deeper awareness and heartfelt wisdom.
Emerging Trends
These changes in thinking have brought with them new ways of living and doing things.
In recent years we’ve seen a sharp rise in phenomena such as veganism, homeschooling and self-employment, as more and more people opt for lifestyles based on ideas such as compassion and greater freedom.
At the same time, things that were once considered exotic (such as yoga, meditation and alternative healing methods), are fast becoming mainstream.
Entire families are choosing to travel long-term and experience the world for themselves and are sharing their stories online. This material is informing the worldview of many other people, making fear mongering by the mainstream media less effective.
More and more people are giving up the pursuit of greed and excess and embracing conscious consumption. They are turning to ideas such as minimalism and more sustainable ways of living as they seek out meaning and fulfilment.
And on and on it goes, gathering momentum by the second, leading me, and many others to conclude that the Shift is well and truly under way!
The Shift is real. It’s now. Let’s embrace it.
Embracing the Shift
Two of the most helpful thing anyone can do during this time of change is to (a) remain calm, centred and grounded, and (b), to embrace the Shift and speed up their own evolution.
This will not only make the transition easier and more comfortable for them but will also help and speed up the process for others.
‘And just how does one do this?’ you ask? Well, here are a few ideas to help you on your way:
Expand your consciousness. Be more open to change and new information. Be more willing to try out new things and entertain new ideas.
Question your beliefs. Are they serving you? Are they serving the greater good? If not, change them. Break down prejudice and preconceived notions. Embrace higher ideas and principles founded on love and oneness.
Rediscover and rekindle your connection to All that Is. Develop your knowledge and awareness about spirituality.
Sit in silence more often and learn to tune into your inner voice and intuition and learn to trust this highest form of guidance. You’ll know what it is from the way you feel.
Lead from the heart and let the head serve it, instead of the other way round. Learn to make important decisions based on the way you feel. Remember, it often boils down to a question of love (heart) or fear (head). Choose love.
De-clutter your life in every way. Shed the excess and make way for the new. Give away what you no longer need. Let someone else give those things a loving new home. Clear out your inbox. Cancel the unnecessary subscriptions and memberships. Reclaim your space, your time, your attention and your energy.
Make more space and time for your hobbies, passions and pursuits.
Let go of resentment. Forgive others for their transgressions and forgive yourself for all the times you didn’t get it right.
Let go of fear, worry and anxiety. Look back on your life and see how far you’ve come. Use that knowledge to trust Life and yourself more.
Learn to be kinder to yourself and others. Stop judging, criticising and comparing.
Laugh more. Play more. And have lots and lots of fun! Remember that to be childlike is to be God-like. This is who you really are.
Remember your Divinity and your true power.
Remember that you are loved and worthy beyond what anyone on this planet can or will ever express…
Concluding Thoughts
And so, although we find ourselves in a time of great uncertainty and transformation, bear in mind that we are not helpless in any way. As powerful creators, we can claim control over our destiny, if we so wish, and we can create the reality or the outcome that we want.
No one can force you to change, nor should they even try. But, the current is strong now and you can ride the wave if you want to.

In terms of online resources, it was somewhat tricky for me to find something credible, yet balanced and open-minded about the subjects mentioned above, to recommend to you. However, I’m happy to suggest this article about 2012 by author and researcher John Major Jenkins, which seems well researched and would at least make a good starting point.
